Vegan Beauty Products on Rise a Response to Consumers’ Natural and Ethical Demands

ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, UNITED STATES, September 26, 2023 / — The vegan beauty products market share experienced a consistent growth rate with a CAGR exceeding 4% during the period from 2013 to 2017. Competitive Landscape:

In the intensely competitive global market, both regional and multinational companies are vying for product distinctiveness. The growing prevalence of e-commerce marketing is gradually eroding the market share of global brands, providing smaller and aspiring vegan cosmetic firms with an entry point into the market, thus intensifying competition.

In 2018, L’Oréal S.A, a significant player in the vegan cosmetic products market, made a noteworthy move by announcing the acquisition of Logocos Naturkosmetik AG, a renowned German producer of vegan cosmetics. L’Oréal highlighted Logocos’ ownership of two well-established and authentic vegan brands, along with its expertise in the organic cosmetic industry, as highly advantageous for L’Oréal’s expansion strategy. This acquisition solidified L’Oréal’s position among the leading personal care companies offering certified vegan cosmetic products.

Also in 2018, Cosmax Inc, a major cosmetics manufacturer based in South Korea, achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Asian company to receive the Expertise Vegan Europe (EVE) “Vegan” badge for its dedicated unit producing cruelty-free cosmetic products. This prestigious label is expected to open up new avenues for the company’s growth within the vegan cosmetic products market.

Furthermore, in 2018, O Boticário, a prominent player in the vegan cosmetic products market, expanded its presence in the UAE by opening a second retail location in Dubai. This strategic move allowed the company to broaden its reach in the Middle East and engage with new customer segments, offering its range of cruelty-free cosmetics.

-A discernible trend among consumers is their aversion to chemical-laden beauty products, primarily due to safety concerns. They are gravitating towards products labeled as “natural” and “safe,” which is expected to drive the adoption of vegan beauty products in the forecast period.

-Modern consumers are becoming more conscientious about the raw materials used in products and their sourcing. Recognizing the environmental consequences of their choices, consumers are favoring eco-friendly products. This shift is creating a conducive environment for the widespread adoption of vegan beauty products.

-Furthermore, the increasing presence of beauty bloggers and social media influencers showcasing makeup techniques using vegan beauty products is bolstering the prospects of manufacturers in this space.

The availability of counterfeit goods remains a significant barrier in the vegan cosmetic products market

Another barrier to the widespread use of vegan cosmetic products market is the lower shelf life of vegan goods compared to synthetic ones.

The Best New Beauty Products That Launched in September 202…

We may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

With such an enormous range of beauty and skincare products (celeb-backed or otherwise) released each month, how can you discern whether the latest moisturizer, mascara, or lipstick is actually worth purchasing? That’s where we come in. W publishes a monthly roundup of the best beauty products that launched recently—genuine game-changers you should consider purchasing. Whether you’re a skincare connoisseur, an avid makeup collector (slash borderline hoarder) or you’re simply browsing for something fresh to add to your beauty regimen, these are our favorite new products, which we recommend incorporating into your repertoire.

The finest pigment included in this exquisite jewel-toned palette is the divine emerald hue. Try it as a smoky eye paired with the pearlescent white as a top coat for fall—the epitome of French chic.

This powerful, plant-based, skin-brightening serum by Epicuren minimizes the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin discoloration. The hero ingredients are a trio of tranexamic acid, niacinamide, and bakuchiol. This is an active serum—so make sure first to apply the Soothe Dermal Repair Mist, followed by the Moisture Surge Hyaluronic Acid Serum, then apply the Brightening Serum. Finally, apply your moisturizer. (And don’t forget sunscreen!)

Microneedling is one of the best ways to boost your skin’s collagen and elastin production. Editrix Wellness just launched an at-home microneedling stamp (not a roller, as those may tear your dermal layers) that delivers a powerful fusion of hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, stabilized vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides, and water extracted from inside grains of rice. Each kit contains two glass, serum-filled microneedles; the needle heads are made up of 20 sterile, hair-thin, gold-plated surgical steel needles. It’s the only microneedling device on the market that comes preloaded with serum and is disposable, so there is zero chance of contamination. One kit provides a two-week supply for noticeably tighter, brighter skin. The recommended usage is for 4-6 weeks consecutively to see best results.

Several factors make this new eye serum a powerhouse in helping tighten and restore the eye area to look its most vibrant. Red algae composition revives the skin around the eyes to optimal vibrancy, botanical Calanthe extract helps with overall upkeep of eye elasticity, and one of Sturm’s most effective skincare ingredients—her proprietary blend of Purslane Extract—is a super antiaging skincare ingredient that gives an unmatched radiant glow and dewy appearance.

This rechargeable LED therapy device from London-based oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Maryam Zamani targets wrinkles and dullness occurring around the eyes. The LED masks come with disposable hydrocolloid eye patches infused with peptides, sodium hyaluronate (a more penetrable salt form of hyaluronic acid with a smaller molecular structure) and niacinamide. Use this product three to five times a week, or as needed, for seriously vibrant under-eyes.

Typically, face oils dole out emollience but lack water-based hydration because of their chemical composition. Noble Panacea has conquered that scientific hurdle by developing a specialized OMSVE encapsulation technology that can deliver hydration through time-released hyaluronic acid, oil-controlling Saw Palmetto oil, skin barrier-protecting raspberry seed oil, and nourishing plum kernel oil to deliver seriously soft skin. Each dose is individually packaged to use morning and night—perfect for popping in your bag before work or while traveling.

One of the most potent eye creams released this year visibly reduces the appearance of crow’s feet and puffiness. Chantecaille’s powerful, firming dose of tetrapeptides; its new proprietary botanical sugar ingredient, as well as hyaluronic acid help plump the whole eye area and make your tired peepers a thing of the past.

Of late, we’ve been besotted by anything and everything this hair care line has released. Shu Uemura’s newest launch is one of the most convenient hair restoration treatments available at your fingertips, literally. The overnight one-to-two pump leave-in hair treatment is to be applied on dry locks to deliver soft, frizz-free—and most importantly—healthy hair in the morning. There’s no rinsing necessary and hair doesn’t feel weighed down in the slightest.

We are currently in a sea of retinol serum launches—but this truly is one of the more distinct active retinol emulsions to come out this year. While it does contain bakuchiol—one of the most common plant actives for skin renewal—it also incorporates shea butter, which we all know is a very powerful skin-soothing agent (often a necessary one to integrate into your skincare routine when going to retinol route). Shea butter is often ideal for those who like retinol but experience sensitivity. Extremozyme enzymes (derived from plants that thrive in high salt environments) also work to restore suppleness to the skin, battling free radicals and dehydration in particular.

If you’re searching for an SPF foundation that delivers a gorgeous glow-matte finish, this will not disappoint. The two standout wow factors are the fermented kefir—which helps regulate microbiome balance—and the brand’s lab composition of niacinamide, which not only aids in hyperpigmentation reduction, but with continued use, also works on diminishing fine lines. Additionally, this product is workout-friendly as it’s non-comedogenic, transfer-resistant, and fragrance-free.

Kenyan ‘Kinyozi’ Man Who Started Hawking Beauty Products wi…

  • A Nairobi businessman narrated how he grew his business from a small barber shop to a beauty parlour in town
  • James Mùgí Ndungu runs several businesses in Kenya’s capital and outside cities like Nakuru
  • Ndungu ventured into car dealership, which grew his business empire to over KSh 2 million business venture

Starting a business requires resilience, understanding your personal background, knowing what you want and the options around you as an entrepreneur.

Ndungu ventured into the beauty and car dealership businesses in Nairobi.

These four principles transformed James Mùgí Ndungu from a hawker and a barber shop worker to a multi-million business owner.

How Ndungu started hawking beauty products

In an exclusive interview with, Ndungu said his first job after school was to work in a barber shop.

PAY ATTENTION: Do you have a video that never fails to make you smile? Spread the positivity by sharing it with us via WhatsApp: 0732482690.

“I have several businesses, but my main business venture is in beauty machines – blowdryers, nail driers, and others. After school, I trained as a barber and started working at a barber shop at home in Limuru,” said Ndungu.

Ndungu noted that with time, he learned the tricks of the business – repairing the machines and how to get new ones.

He then learned about machines used in a salon since the same people selling barber shop machines were selling salon items.

“After my job, I could get to town, get some machines and hawk at the nearest salons. I started with KSh 3,000 from my savings… I started with one, two, then three machines… until I became a serious hawker,” he explained.

As the demand for his products grew, Ndungu employed two people to help with the distribution and marketing.

He said the turning point in his business was when he identified a loophole in the market – where people were being sold fake machines.

“At this point, I realised a market loophole… most of these machines come from Germany. So, people were being sold fake products, and there were a lot of complaints. I looked for a genuine company – international – and picked their products, and acted like their marketer. That was my breakthrough.

Mugi revealed all this while he was operating in Limuru and Nairobi, but after the breakthrough, he started supplying to towns outside the capital like Nakuru.

Earnings from beauty sales

The businessman estimated his income then at around KSh 70,000 to KSh 100,000 after expenses.

“That was around 2017 and 2018, I was operating on fieldwork. In 2019, I managed to open my shop.

“The business grew much during 2019 and 2020 and has employed six people, four in the field and two in the shop. My revenue has increased to KSh 150,000 plus expenses,” he revealed.

Ndungu invested in many businesses after his beauty business blossomed, including an executive barber shop at Kasarani and a tattoo studio.

He also runs a solon in Pipeline, and his business operates under Jaiystar Internationals Ltd and Beauteque Kenya suppliers.

Car dealership venture

Ndungu’s passion for cars pulled his investments into car dealership, and he now operates the venture under Jaiystar Motors Ltd.

“I ventured into car dealership out of passion. In 2021, I got involved with the Suzuki Swift Sport car brand.

“People used to ask me for information about cars… my friend had a car, which he wanted to sell. He approached me, and that’s how I started, in June 2022,” he narrated.

Ndungu said he started with a capital of KSh 1.4 million and bought three cars.

He leveraged social media marketing – Instagram and Facebook for beauty and WhatsApp/Twitter for car dealerships to grow his business empire.

“I found a dealer who was clearing his yard. So I bought three pick-ups at a discount. By now, my car stock value has grown to between KSh 2.53 million and KSh 3 million.

“We also offer financial advice for first-time car owners, how to get a car loan and which car brand is best,” said Ndungu.

The entrepreneur said he also offers car hire services for an executive van.

High taxes and exchange rate

He said the major challenges to his business is increased taxes and exchange rate.

The Kenya Shilling continued to depreciate against the US dollar, affecting many businesses.

“My challenge has been the exchange rate and increased taxes. A product I used to sell, KSh 12,000, has increased to KSh 18,000, and that makes it difficult to convince a client who bought it three years ago.

“The exchange rate has increased transaction costs and import costs… the import duty on cars increased 35% from the previous 25%,” he lamented.

The rise in import duty on cars came at a time when the cost of living was at an all-time high following the implementation of the Finance Act 2023.

Best hair products for blondes: Best Picks trials Rogue Bea…

I’m actually embarrassed that I fit the brunette-to-blonde-and-back-again stereotype.

Legend has it (hairdressers, this comes from hairdressers) that once a woman even touches a hint of hair dye she will be forever bouncing from her natural locks and back again for as long as she shall live.

That isn’t a verbatim quote but the message is as strong as ever.

Catch the best deals and products hand-picked by our team at Best Picks >>

As soon as I started to put highlights into my naturally light brown hair aged 17 I began a rollercoaster of hair treatments, breakage and near-cyclical mind changes that have seen me yo-yo between colours for the last 10 years.

At this present moment I have been a solid brunette for eight months or so. Naturally this is far too long and I’m on my way back to blonde again.

This is my current hair on the journey. Credit: Rogue Beauty
The products I’m using. Credit: Rogue Beauty

But with every blonde change comes a whole new wave of hair hurt and I’m determined to keep as many hairs attached to my scalp this time as possible.

Rogue Beauty Product Knowledge Specialist Britt Hortsen heard my cries for help and has devised a schedule of washing and treatments that should prevent too much damage.

Let’s start with what we’re using in the shower.

Britt recommends using IGK’s Pay Day Shampoo and Conditioner ($45 each) for its bonding and repairing properties as it’s “a great foundation for the lightening journey and process”, she says.

The products are powered by clinically proven vegan silk and biomimetic bond-building technology, as well as baobab and amla oil for added moisture and repair.

To tone and balance the pH level of the hair we’re turning to Maria Nila’s Silver Shot ($15) which is a great addition to the regimen to maintain a healthy blonde whilst removing brassiness.

I’ve been very blonde in the past. Credit: Rogue Beauty

It’s also in a tiny bottle so it’s super portable, particularly when you love weekend trips and camping the same way I do.

In the mask department, and for another pint-sized tube, Britt claims the $16.99 Maria Nila Luminous Colour Booster Masque is perfect for intensely nourishing and hydrating.

“The Colour Guard Complex protects colour from fading due to washing, UV exposure and heat styling,” she said.

What’s more, it has a delicious apple and peach scent to it, so I have been applying it post-conditioner for three minutes before rinsing it off at the end of my shower.

On days when I need a heavy duty product, I’m turning to IGK’s Antisocial Overnight Bond-Building Dry Hair Mask ($52).

This is such a unique buy because its slow release technology makes it perfect to apply to dry hair before bedtime, thereby allowing it to absorb overnight.

You don’t need to rinse it out the following day so it’s great for people like me that need to get out of the front door fast.

Instead of being a cream consistency it’s a simple spray so it doesn’t weigh down the hair – especially for those of us who are practically oily by the end of the day.

I’ve also been very dark. Credit: Rogue Beauty

To brush through my hair gently I’m using the Oribe Resin Detangling Comb which I know is eye-wateringly expensive at $70 a pop but I find it pulls out way less hair post-shower than my traditional Tangle Teezer does.

It’s weighty so you know it’s a comb you’ll have forever.

Britt acknowledges that blondes need to be careful when heat styling their hair too.

“Often we find when heat-styling blondes the hair can become brassy,” she said.

“But the R+Co Sunset Boulevard Blonde Toning Styling Crème ($49) will nourish and maintain blonde tones whilst styling.”

It’s a lightweight leave-in with a violet pigment so it will counteract the brassiness.

Now the only other thing left to do is wait patiently for my eight week appointments as I hope (and pray) that I can get back to my beloved blonde again.

The Beauty Products Delina Medhin Use to the Last Drop

Photo: Karl Ferguson Jr./Courtesy of Delina Medhin

Makeup artist Delina Medhin’s Instagram bio describes her best, as she’s definitely an “authentic, passionate human.” This shines through in everything she does, from being Issa Rae’s makeup artist for the film The Photograph to doing makeup for 2 Dope Queens’ Phoebe Robinson. Additionally, Medhin makes time for her podcast, It Takes a Village, where she discusses the ins and outs of entrepreneurship with industry leaders such as Daniel Martin and Katie Jane Hughes. Overall? It’s her clients that keep her inspired. “I really love them. They are all powerful, incredible, and kind human beings,” the North Carolina–raised, NYC-based artist tells the Cut. “My makeup career has been special because of my intentional choices.”

Medhin got her start at the Crabtree Valley Mall M.A.C. Cosmetics Counter, in her hometown after graduating from North Carolina State University with a bachelor’s in Chemistry. “My parents didn’t understand. I was at the counter all the time, even on my days off,” she says. “I had a deep desire to play all the time,” be it with the face charts, colors, or brushes. “I wanted to make people feel beautiful,” she adds. From there, Medhin established her own bridal clientele on the side of her nine-to-five job. After moving to New York in 2013, she decided to pursue makeup artistry full time. And, it’s safe to say it all worked out, as Medhin has since worked with brands and people such as Anna Sui, The Row, and Ilana Glazer. “When I came to NYC, I saw that people were embracing individual style,” she explains of what kept her hustling. “There is a rawness to makeup here. The aesthetic is a bit undone, not perfect, lived in, and, in my opinion, perfect for me.”

And when the day is over and done with, Medhin makes time for a hydrating skin-care routine, a face mask, and, of course, meditation. “Self-care is restorative. It’s meditation, it’s moving my body and working out,” she says. “It’s all about connecting with myself and touching base with my thoughts and needs spiritually. Filling my cup first is important so that I am abundantly able to give to others.”

My morning and evening routines change often. As an influencer, I am constantly given new products to try, so it is tempting to move new things in and take other things out. But below are the things I’ve been using consistently for the past couple of years and come back to often.

7:30 a.m.: I use the Sofie Pavitt Face Cleanser for 30 seconds. It’s very easy to use. It has a slip to it, so it doesn’t create friction on the skin. It completely cleanses my skin, and my skin got used to it immediately.

7:33 a.m.: I dry my face with Strip Makeup cleansing wipes. They have a really unique texture. It kind of reminds me of gauze (but softer). It wipes off any excess water, but also it has a way of getting rid of any texture. I know you’re not supposed to pop pimples, but it grips the skin perfectly for it. It also takes off any extra dead skin cells so your serums and moisturizers sync right in.

7:34 a.m.: For my serum, I use the Clarins Double Serum. My mom actually loves this more than me. She told me the other day she got stopped outside of church and asked what she was using. She already has incredible skin, but this little boost of hydration is her obsession. I also use double serum once every couple days at least. It feels like water for the face and plays really well with other products. There is also a specific how-to apply the serum method. It’s a press, not a rub, method that I learned from their team, and it’s worth learning the technique. It makes a difference in how it sinks into the skin.

7:35 a.m.: Next, I go in with the Glow Recipe Avocado Ceramide Serum. If you need something to wear under makeup in the summer, but you don’t want something heavy, this is perfect. It is gorgeous under makeup — makes the skin look hydrated but not wet. I press this into my skin gently.

7:36 a.m.: For my eye cream, I use the Alpyn Beauty Line Filling Eye Cream. It is incredible. It’s a great boost for the skin under the eye, and it truly moisturizes it. I really see a plump happen.

7:37 a.m.: Also for the eyes, I love using the Wander Beauty Eye Masks for an extra boost under the eye. Great to wear as you do your makeup or leave them on as you eat breakfast and get ready for the day. I leave them on for at least 15 minutes.

7:39 a.m.: I have perpetually dry lips that are a little gray naturally so I like to use a lip balm that moisturizes and has a little tint. Extra Lip Bare Lip Tint by Bobbi Brown in Bare Pink is perfect for daytime. I also have one in my bag.

7:40 a.m.: Elta MD’s SPF 46 is perfect for the daytime. I love this sunscreen. It’s perfect for skin care. Other times, I also love using First Aid Beauty’s Tinted Sunscreen. It’s incredible!

7:42 a.m.: After all of this, I journal. I do a three-page journal session in the morning. It is called “the artist’s way.” This journal is incredible for creatives working through mental blocks and also removing the conversation from in our heads and putting it on paper. Getting to a place where we can be kind to ourselves is the first way I begin to give back to myself before giving back to others.

9:00 p.m.: I use KraveBeauty’s Makeup Rewind Oil Cleanser. It comes in a squeeze tube and doesn’t need water to activate. I use this to massage the makeup off my skin, and when you rinse, your skin feels clean but not stripped.

9:02 p.m.: When I don’t use Sofie Pavitt, I like using the Glow Recipe Avocado Ceramide Cleanser. It’s very easy to use and it has a slip to it so it doesn’t create friction on the skin. It also smells incredible, and it gets rid of any congestion on my face, especially on my forehead, literally overnight.

9:03 p.m.: Some nights I use the Biologique Recherche Mask Vivant. She is pricey so it took me a while to get her but when I did, I noticed my skin looked incredible. It really pulls everything out of the skin, and it hydrates better than anything else I know. It is made of live yeast, so the best thing to do is put the expiry date on the bottle so you finish it before the expiration date. I was introduced to it when I was looking online for products to use for acne prone skin and someone had recommended their P50, and while I loved P50 and still do, Mask Vivant got a permanent position on my shelf.

9:20 p.m.: For Retinol, I’m using one from Shani Darden. If you haven’t tried this yet, you are missing out. It gently resurfaces the skin but so quickly and easily that it looks good the next day. She also has a lactic acid that I sometimes use as well, but this product is the truth. I love it. I never have to worry about that raw feeling you get sometimes after using retinoids.

9:22 p.m.: I use the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream to moisturize. If you know you know. This is a gorgeous, rich cream that looks incredible on the skin and locks in all the juicy serums.

9:24 p.m.: I always put Aquaphor on my lips before I go to sleep. I buy the super-big jar so I don’t accidentally put it in my bag and forget. It stays in my medicine cabinet.

9:25 p.m.: In the evening, I meditate. Sometimes guided meditation or complete silence. It helps me separate from the blue-screen energy that we have all day looking at screens.

Whew, confidence is such a good word. I believe confidence for me is transparency and always being gracious and kind. Not everyone is for me, but I am okay with that.

I don’t like when anyone recommends a product they don’t like just so they can make money. A lack of authenticity and integrity always makes me cringe.

I love the inclusivity. There is something for everyone. Every person can find a brand that is thinking about them in some way, and I think that is beautiful. Additionally, I wish kindness would exist. Everyone can wear makeup no matter their age, sex, gender, or sexual orientation, and I wish people would be more kind to others and themselves.

I love when people really take it there and go to the extreme, try different things and explore the art. I also really love when people teach on TikTok, I am a forever student.

An ingredient that is overhyped is probably titanium dioxide. I sadly cannot use most chemical sunscreens because of the additives but genuinely I’m an outlier. If you can use chemical sunscreen and it works for you, don’t be persuaded to do something that doesn’t make sense. Speaking of sunscreen, oxybenzone puts me into immediate hives. I literally break out and my skin gets itchy.

I like hydration. I want to go to bed dewy and wake up dewy when it comes to moisturizer. But when I put that makeup on I need it to be matte. Matte appears to be smoother and honestly I’m obsessed.

With newer brands, I have to have a connection with the founder. I have to see their story and understand WHY they created the product. If I feel like they filled a need I am interested in finding out more about the products. With my tried-and-true legacy brands, I almost always am going to try the product if I have had a good experience previously. But once I love your brand, whether it is designer or indie, I am always going to give your new product a chance. I have a podcast called It Takes A Village to Raise an Entrepreneur on which I talk to creative entrepreneurs about their business strategy, and it stemmed from my interest in origin stories.

I love Tracee Elis Ross. The minimalism with her makeup is amazing. It always looks perfect. I also really love how regal and classic Iman’s makeup Looks.

A pack of Mighty Patch pimple spot treatment

See them in action on TikTok here!

Promising review: “I heard all about these on TikTok, so I decided to order. I switched my birth control and was having a ton of breakouts, these are amazing! They helped me stop picking at my face and my skin is so clear now. I will always have these in my house from now on!” — Kiara Galloway

An eye primer

Promising review: “So let me start by saying I have used nearly every eyeshadow primer available. From high end to low…they don’t hold a candle to Thank Me Later. I have very oily skin. Using this primer, shadow lasts a full eight hours or more. I could get maybe five or six out of the other brands if I was lucky. I got this as a sample in my Ipsy bag, and I had to buy the full-size product straight away! I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. Thank you, Elizabeth Mott, for finally making a primer that lasts! I love this stuff!” — Melissa Mae

Jenae Sitzes / BuzzFeed

And a long-lasting Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray

BuzzFeed shopping editor Jenae Sitzes has this and absolutely loves it. “I first put this setting spray to the test for a wedding that involved taking many trains in and out of Manhattan on a hot day and being in crowded rooms where airflow was limited. As such, I was sweating up a storm, but my makeup looked flawless by the time I got home that night — all thanks to this Urban Decay setting spray that I knew after one use I’d be repurchasing,” she said. “I’m new to setting sprays, so it felt weird at first to spray something on top of my carefully crafted makeup look, but it dried in no time without messing anything up. It also didn’t feel heavy or sticky on my face — it didn’t feel like anything at all, actually — and my makeup looked better than it ever has after hours of wear. (For reference, I have dry, sensitive skin, and it caused me no issues.)

“Soon after that event, I put it to an even bigger task: surviving sweat, tears, and 12 hours of wear for the Taylor Swift Eras Tour. My makeup look (pictured above) was done by 2 p.m., and thanks to my now highly trusted Urban Decay spray, it stayed completely intact (minus the lipstick I purposefully wiped off while scarfing down post-concert pizza) until the time I got home just after 2 a.m. Here’s what it endured during that timespan: multi-leg public transportation to and from the venue, waiting in lines under the blaring sun to get in, multiple meals and drinks, jumping, screaming, and literally full-on crying multiple times during the show. My liquid eyeliner, eyeshadow, non-waterproof mascara, foundation, blush, and even glitter (for the most part) were unfazed, and I owe it all to this setting spray.”

VieBeauti eyelash growth serum

Promising review: “I bought this in January because of TikTok reviews. I tried to be consistent with this 1–2 times a day for a little over two months now, and I’ve seen a huge difference. My eyelashes are noticeably longer and I wear way way less mascara. I usually give up on things like this when I don’t see results instantly, but I’m glad I stuck with it. It takes a couple of months, but I definitely will keep using this serum.” — Julie

And a lash-lifting kit

This kit includes lash glue, lash perm, lash fixation, lash nutrition, lash cleanser, five silicone pads, three lash cleaning brushes, 10 lash micropores, 10 brushes and five gel under-eye pads.

Promising review: Okay I’m not gonna lie, I was worried that this stuff would either not work at all or make all my lashes fall out. Thankfully, it was neither and the results are UNREAL. I HIGHLY suggest watching some YouTube videos of other people using their perm kits before attempting to use yours. I have big fingers and small eyes so it was difficult for me to get the lift pads in the right positions but once that was over, the rest was a breeze. Unlike some of the other kits I’ve seen on here, this one has basically everything you need. The only other things I needed were a mirror, some tissue, and a little bit of plastic wrap to cover my lashes while waiting for the lotions to work their magic. I’m totally impressed and will definitely be buying this again! — Ryan

A Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue spray

Tower 28 is a small biz whose founder, Amy Liu, has struggled with eczema for years. The brand specializes in products for sensitive skin, and everything is also vegan and cruelty-free.

I’ve been seeing hypochlorous acid sprays all over my TikTok FYP so obviously I was influenced and wanted to try it out. I really hate the feeling of getting all sweaty in a workout and not being able to wash my face right away, so this has been a great option to just spritz on right away to help me feel more refreshed (and cleaner, knowing some of the bacteria is getting killed and won’t make me break out). I just keep the bottle in my car and will spray it on when I finish a workout. Aside from the myriad benefits this spray has, there is something sooo soothing and refreshing about spritzing a cool mist on your face when you’re hot and sweaty. I have seriously become obsessed with it, it just feels so dang good!! I love knowing that this is helping to protect me from breakouts, and I also am glad to have it on hand for any time I inevitably break out into a mysterious rash (yes this happens, my skin hates me).

A powerful snail repair cream

Promising review: “I’m 55 years old and my skin is a bit sensitive. I don’t have a lot of wrinkles, but I’m definitely noticing a few more laugh lines and forehead crinkles than I had a few years ago! I’ve tried several moisturizers and have not been terribly impressed with any of them until now. This stuff really is great — incredibly hydrating without feeling greasy and it absorbs quickly. It feels great on my skin. In just a few short weeks, I definitely notice an improvement in my skin tone and fewer lines and wrinkles! Plus, the customer service is great. I had questions when I first received the product and got a follow-up response immediately. I will definitely be ordering this product again. I use it in the evening and morning; no need for two different moisturizers. Very pleased!” — sbakey

A microplane foot file

Check out a TikTok of the foot file in action (warning: it’s kinda gross).

Promising review: “I have purchased every callus cream on the market and it has been a waste of time and money. This simple device is a miracle worker. The callous on my big toe is very, very hard and the nearby callus along the side of the foot, while not as large and hard, is also difficult. I have used this device three days in a row, taking off a little at a time and not applying pressure. I apply lotion before and after using it and both areas show substantial improvement. It is important that you do not rush this process. Just a little at a time. Remember how long it took for that callus to form! Because I have been gentle and careful I have no pain. Cleaning is simple. I wholeheartedly recommend!” — desertdragonfly

A spray bottle of SoCozy Curl Spray leave-in conditioner

Check out a TikTok of the SoCozy Curl Spray in action. This is designed to work on all hair types, with reviewers with 2a–4c curls swearing by it!

Promising review: “Amazing!! I had NO idea that my frizzy-haired little girl had beautiful curls. I went down an Instagram rabbit hole and saw a similar girl show how her frizz was curls. I ordered this!! My mind has been blown!! This has changed our lives. It smells so good! It is easy to use and air dry. Before my daughter woke up with terrible bed head that looked like this! Now it is gorgeous soft curls. We will definitely buy again and tell everyone about this product!!” — Amazon customer

A firming eye cream

Promising review: “Incredible product! Still cannot believe what a difference it has made in the lines and wrinkles around my eyes. I use it twice a day, and actually use it for my entire face and my neck. My skin feels so soft, and lines are disappearing.” — Melissa

A color corrector pen

Live Tinted is a South Asian woman-owned small biz that specializes in vegan cruelty-free beauty products for all skin tones.

Promising review: “I can’t believe I’ve lived without this product for so long! This is SOOOO much better than the concealers I’ve used in the past because it really covers up my dark circles. This product is a staple in my makeup routine! Can’t live without this!” — Undisclosed

A roll-on waxing kit

The kit includes a 40W high-power roll on wax warmer, two boxes of wax (honey and lavender scents), six packs of calming oil wipes and 100 nonwoven wax strips. AND! Don’t feel any pressure to wax your body hair if that’s not your style. You do you, boo!

Promising review: “I’ve spent TONS of money and time going to spas and nail salons trying to find the perfect wax. After doing some research, I came across this bad boy and let me tell you, I am NEVER going back! It’s so easy to use, and also so convenient. They send enough product to thoroughly try everything out. I also love that they send two scents, so you can find which one you love the most. The wax strips are sturdy enough to undergo the pressure you apply before pulling it off, as well as the actual pull. They get everything underneath and you can even use a single strip multiple times. No need to fly through the pack of strips anymore, when you can reuse the single strip a few times! HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you’re always busy, and on the go, or just wanting some extra self-care in the comfort of your home. 💕” — Alisa Garza

Radha Beauty Rosehip Oil

Promising review: “My new holy grail! I have super sensitive, acne-prone skin in a very dry climate. This stuff is seriously so amazing. I use it from my face to my toes. It’s completely eradicated any dry skin I had and makes me glow. I’ve gotten so many compliments on my skin since I’ve started using it, even my boyfriend noticed! I love it after chemical peels too. It gets rid of peeling and dry patches as well as soothes any redness. It’s a decent-sized bottle for what you pay!” — Brynnieb09

A heat-activated anti-frizz treatment

Promising review: This product is incredible — just WOW. In all my years of existence, I was never able to tame my naturally curly hair into a sleek, silky, frizz-free look, until now. I l don’t know what kind of magical sorcery went into making this product, but this stuff is amazing. — Lillee45

A bottle of Blume’s meltdown acne oil

See why one TikToker is a fan here! Blume is a BIPOC woman- and family-owned small biz based in Vancouver that makes cruelty-free, vegan and environmentally-friendly skincare in snazzy packaging.

Promising review: “Been using Meltdown for two weeks straight and I’m happy to say that it has done wonders for my skin. It has brightened up my complexion and kept my skin moisturized during these cold winter months. Don’t skip out on this magic serum.” — Linnea V.

A bottle of cuticle repair oil

Watch one TikToker apply it here!

Promising review: “I am not kidding you, this is my first Amazon review ever. Just a few weeks ago my nails were brittle and peeling, I always have my nails done and they were pretty much destroyed… then I saw this on TikTok and decided to give it a try and I legitimately have never had healthier nails in my life! If you’re thinking about buying this… buy it!” — Jocelyn Nackley

Juno & Co.’s Clean 10 Cleansing Balm

Juno & Co. is a small business focused on moving away from the traditional beauty market to sustainable and simplified formulas.

Promising review: “I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!!! I found it on TikTok and OMG!! It works so well. I don’t have to sit there and rub the crap out of my eyelashes to get the waterproof mascara off. I will admit, it doesn’t take 100% of the makeup off but about 95% of my makeup comes off. It is not water-resistant, as emulsifying it with water helps take the makeup off. I have not found a better makeup remover, and yes, that includes micellar water (which also works well but leaves my skin feeling oily). With this cleansing balm, my face feels hydrated and smooth. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!!!!! 1,000/10 would recommend!!!” — Deetje Frederick

Or a super-soft Makeup Eraser

Promising review: “I am amazed by this product. I would even say that this is life-altering! I have not had to buy makeup remover in three months and don’t believe I will ever have to again! When I used makeup remover, I felt like I could never get all of my makeup off and I had to rub my eyes quite a bit to get it off. Even after a lot of rubbing when using makeup remover I still would wake up the next morning with makeup residue from the previous day and I never felt I could completely get my makeup off. With Makeup Eraser, there is not one bit of makeup left!! It is like magic!! Make sure you follow directions, you have to use warm water and use the correct side!” — Sprklbuz

An extremely easy-to-use and downright magical spray

Gray hair is honestly pretty fierce, so feel free to let those silvery strands shine!

Promising review: “I use this in between my monthly ‘cut and color’ trips to the beauty salon. That third week really shows the grey roots, so I use this until my next appointment. A few sprays along the hairline and part, and I am ready to go. It will stay for a couple of days if you don’t have to wash your hair daily. Otherwise, it will wash right out with your shampoo. The red that I buy is a more auburn color, and gives a great look to my hair. I buy this on a regular basis. One can lasts about 10 applications of touch-ups for me.” — Jean

An outrageously popular Differin gel

Because of the prescription-strength retinoid, make sure to consult your dermatologist before introducing this into your skincare routine.

BuzzFeed Shopping editor Natalie Brown has tried this out on her own skin! Here are her takeaways:

“1. One pea-sized application per day is all it takes.

“2. It’s just as effective over moisturizer as it would be if you applied it directly to your skin.

“3. Apply it at night, and you MUST wear sunscreen every day when you use this!”

Promising review: “I don’t have too much of an issue with acne, however I do have hormonally based pimples once a month, with a few pimples that break through every now and then. I really purchased because it is a retinoid that you don’t have to go to the doctor for and I wanted it to help with some sun damage on my face and fine lines. I’ve only been using this for a month, but I can honestly say that within the first week I could see a change in my skin. I have absolutely had not one break out of any kind and my skin is so smooth. I sincerely believe that the discoloration and hyperpigmentation on my skin is beginning to fade.” — Catattack

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer

Promising review: “Best under-eye concealer ever. I wouldn’t go out without applying this concealer. It blends nicely with my foundation and has never caked. The sponge applicator is soft and makes application quick and easy. I will continue to use this product and hope, like many products I’ve used over the years, that it doesn’t get discontinued.” — Morty

The highly effective Bio-Oil

Bio-Oil contains retinol, which accelerates skin turnover but can make you more sensitive to the sun, so don’t forget your sunscreen!

Promising review: “Bio-Oil is the BEST skin product on the market. I use it as a twice a day — morning and before I go to bed. Small lines have disappeared. My skin is very smooth and seems to glow. A doctor recommended this to one of my friends who told me about it. I have bought several bottles as gifts. Be patient. It will take a few months for you to see notice the changes. I am 71 years old. No one paid me to write this.” — Amazon customer

Bread Beauty Supply Elastic Bounce Cream

Bread Beauty Supply is a Black woman-owned small business that excels in creating haircare for not-so-basic hair. And they cater for curl types 3a to 4c.

Promising review: “This curl cream is really it. I have tried different ones before but I feel like this one leaves my hair bouncy and moisturized. I really like the smell, too — its so sweet, makes me want to eat it hehe. I like that a little goes a long way and the packaging is really great size so it would last a long time.” — Sephora customer

Elizabeth Lilly / BuzzFeed

A color-correcting treatment

Promising review:This product is a game changer for anyone with red rosacea-prone skin. I have used everything from drugstore to expensive products from my dermatologist, plus many IPL treatments to reduce the redness. Nothing worked until I found this. A small amount goes a long way so I use a sunscreen underneath. I found patting it on my skin worked and the redness is gone instantly and stays that way all day.” — DGladMarten

Or a calming cream that’ll help soothe skin

Promising review: “Absolutely worth every single cent! I have severe rosacea that leave my nose and cheeks dry, flaky, and breaking out. I’ve had little success with anything topical that will provide and relief to my irritated skin. My sister recommended it to me when I was looking for a moisturizer after a severe sunburn that left my nose blistered and raw. I received my order Wednesday and applied it that night after washing my face. By Saturday afternoon my face is almost completely healed, preventing pealing, and helped clear up my rosacea skin irritation! I’m completely amazed! I’ve applied less than a dime size over my face four times! My skin has truly never felt better! It’s got to be witchcraft because not even the different prescriptions I’ve tried over the years have produced these results.” — Amazon customer

A bottle of sulfate-free Biotin shampoo

Talk to your doctor before using this product if you’re experiencing hair loss. Read more about biotin shampoo and hair at Cleveland Clinic.

Promising review: “I love this shampoo! I had gastric sleeve surgery and my hair was very, very thin. I started taking biotin and switched to biotin shampoo as recommended by my doctor. It doesn’t make your hair grow by washing it but it makes your hair and roots stronger. And it worked. After using the whole bottle, my hair was stronger. I had a lot of new growth that was sticking around (the previous new growth fell out early on) and my hair was getting thicker. Eight months later, my hair is back to normal. It’s longer and thicker than ever. I still use it twice a week and love it! I’m not in love with the way it smells but others love it when they smell my hair.” — Diane J. Huff

Chanel Chance Eau Fraîche Eau de Parfum

Chance Eau Fraîche Eau de Parfum

It goes without saying that Chanel is one of the most sought-after perfume houses—not many of us can say we haven’t owned at least one bottle of N°5 perfume or Bleu de Chanel cologne. This summer, the label is introducing yet another sure-to-be-a-hit: Chance Eau Fraîche eau de parfum. The scent is the work of Chanel’s in-house perfumer Olivier Polge, who sought to add depth and intensity to the pre-existing eau de toilette. He maintained the jasmine at the heart of the fragrance, but accentuated it with citrusy zest and rich ambery accords. Described as fresh and woody, expect this invigorating scent to linger on the skin. In New York City? Experience the scent firsthand September 8 through 10 at the brand’s retro Lucky Chance Diner—located in Williamsburg just around the corner from the recently opened fragrance and beauty boutique.

Kosas Brow Pop Nano

These days, the en vogue brow trend is bold yet natural-looking. Basically, you want your arches to look like they grew that way. While you could invest in an eyebrow serum to actually grow your hairs, you could also mimic the full look with a pencil. Enter Kosas Brow Pop Nano. This allows users to create ultra-precise, feathery hairs through its fine pencil tip. Not to worry, it fills in sparse areas with effortless, non-waxy pigment. There’s even castor oil and panthenol to keep your brow hairs in tip-top shape.

Osea Seaglow Resurfacing Scrub

Seaglow Resurfacing Scrub

You’ve probably heard mixed guidance on whether a chemical or physical facial exfoliant is best. In reality, it’s all about balance—you don’t want anything too rough or too abrasive, to slough away impurities beneath the surface. Take the guesswork out of exfoliation with Osea’s new Seaglow Resurfacing Scrub. Whipped into a lightweight, marshmallow texture, the formula contains flower acids (a chemical exfoliant derived from hibiscus), kiwi rice microparticles (infused with alpha hydroxy acids), volcanic sand, clay, bentonite, blue-green algae, and botanical oils. It all combines together to cleanse and clarify simultaneously—the result is a smoother, brighter complexion.

Agent Nateur h o l i ( s u n ) spf 50 dewy tinted skin drops

Agent Nateur

h o l i ( s u n ) spf 50 dewy tinted skin drops

Agent Nateur might be known for its range of luxe, natural skincare salves, but with the launch of its skin tint—it might just be a contender in the makeup category. Surely, founder Jena Covello could’ve made a sooner entrance into makeup but she wanted to ensure the skin drops were perfect—read: “safe, effective, nourishing, lightweight, dreamy to apply, and of course, boosted with clinically-proven skincare actives to treat your skin while protecting it” as she puts it. Powered by 100% mineral SPF 50 (zinc oxide 12%) plus a host of botanical oils and extracts, holi(sun) delivers sun protection, lightweight wear, and natural-dewy finish that will translate well into fall.

Merit Solo Shadow Cream-to-Powder Soft Matte Eyeshadow

Solo Shadow Cream-to-Powder Soft Matte Eyeshadow

Maybe it’s just me, or is eyeshadow the hardest part of a makeup regimen to master? Dare I say, the cut creases and statement eye looks that defined the 2010s felt a little outdated for my current beauty look. I haven’t created an eyeshadow look in years—a sentiment the beauty professionals at Merit anticipated. With Solo Shadow, one can blend its cream-to-powder pigments for a wash of effortless, ’90s-inspired color. There are eight shades to choose from—four nude-hued neutrals perfect for every day and four statement pigments, from Social, a powdery mauve, to Viper, an earthy green.

Vyrao The Sixth

Should fragrance be backed by science? Vyrao says yes. When founder Yasmin Sewell sought to create a scent for mindfulness, she enlisted a team of experts—her long-time psychic medium Katt Nicholson, perfumer and trained biochemist Meabh Mc Curtin, and International Flavor & Fragrances Inc.’s Science of Wellness program—for a holistic approach to understanding the connection between the mind and scent. The Sixth was the result. The perfume features cypress oil (associated with boosting self-esteem), patchouli oil (to aid relaxation), and oak moss (for emotional grounding) alongside juniper berry, fennel, apple, and peppermint to amplify positivity, balance, and intuition.

Saie Glossybounce

Glossybounce High-Shine Lip Gloss Oil

Saie’s latest launch is everything a modern lip gloss should be: high-shine, non-sticky, and insanely hydrating. Its conditioning properties come by way of jojoba seed oil, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter, which helps keep lips plump and soft. Even its shades feel contemporary—less early aughts, more sophisticated, your-lips-but-shiner. My favorite? Shade Dip—a dusty rose hue sure to complement any skin tone.

Topicals Sealed Active Scar Filling Primer

Sealed Active Scar Filling Primer

Topicals is the cool-girl beauty line to know. Following its cult-favorite Faded serum and High Roller in-grown salve, founder Olamide Olowe introduces Sealed Active Scar Primer. A solution for pitted acne scars and enlarged pores, the primer contains encapsulated retinol, medical-grade silicone, peptides, and papain to reduce the appearance of post-acne scars and indents over time. I find this especially useful before makeup—its silky, blurring texture is optimal. “Perfect” skin is not the goal here; but rather, feeling good about the skin you’re in.

Givenchy Prisme Libre Loose Powder Blush 12H Radiance

Prisme Libre Loose Powder Blush 12H Radiance

Are we experiencing a powder blush resurgence? While creamy pigments took over 2022, this year, we’re revisiting soft-focused hues to diffuse the skin in a wash of color atop foundation. Formulas old and new are fair game here. Of the new entrants, Givenchy’s Prisme Libre blush has captured our attention. At first glance, you’ll notice each of the six shades offers four harmonious blush colors; this looks très chic on a vanity but also gives you the option to choose which colors to blend. Applying is as simple as swirling your brush in the cap and dusting blush where you’d like it. Better yet, because the powder is finely milled, this feels weightless on the skin.

Herbivore Cloud Milk Coconut + Maca Firming Cream

Cloud Milk Coconut + Maca Firming Cream

My body care regimen is ever-changing simply because new, intriguing products hit the market before I have time to get through a bottle of lotion. I guess we’re finally embracing the notion that we should treat the skin on the body like that of the face. In any case, Herbivore’s Cloud Milk is the latest launch I’ve been gravitating towards (and eagerly recommending to friends). As the name suggests, the cream is whipped into an impeccably lightweight, cloud-like texture that manages to still be moisturizing. We have coconut, maca, and vegan squalane to thank for that. Lather on a bit post-shower to lock in moisture and firm skin over time.

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that over 42% of American adults grapple with obesity, while childhood obesity rates have surged, affecting 19.3% of children and adolescents. This public health crisis imposes not only a heavy burden on individuals but also on healthcare systems and the economy, with obesity-related medical costs exceeding $147 billion annually. (

TREO Foundation’s National Walk from Obesity Day serves as a resolute response to these alarming statistics. By coming together virtually, participants can take a meaningful step towards combatting obesity and its associated health risks.

In-Person walks around the country are also scheduled leading up to the virtual Walk on November 4th. Registration is available for the virtual and all in-person Walks at Donations are also being accepted to support TREO Foundation’s efforts.

Carl Pesta, DO, FASMBS, President of the TREO Foundation, invites all to participate: “The strength of our annual Virtual Walk from Obesity depends on the support from patients, healthcare heroes, and community champions. Your involvement is pivotal.”

Take the #WFOChallenge

TREO Foundation has created the #WFOCHALLENGE to inspire leaders and members of the weight loss surgery community to challenge colleagues, friends and family members to help support National Walk from Obesity Day. TREO Foundation will be supporting the community with the Virtual Weekly Champions, a social media campaign to showcase those that accept the #WFOChallenge.

Team captains are encouraged to take charge by creating and managing their team’s online fundraising page, sharing their team’s story, and adding photos and a logo. Teams can represent diverse sectors, including Healthcare, Corporations, ASMBS State Chapters, General groups, or Nonprofits.

Participation can be done at time of the day on November 4th. We encourage you to participate in your favorite physical activities like walking, running, or rowing.

As the event date approaches, participants can stay updated and access more information about the Nov 4th, 2023 Virtual Walk from Obesity on TREO Foundation’s official website and follow us on social at @WalkFromObesity and @TreoFoundation.

Influencers are influencing men the most to spend on beauty…

SALT LAKE CITY — The marketing world has been taken over by influencers. Companies pay them to post about their products on social media – sometimes handsomely.

For all the eye rolls women have endured for clichés about vanity and overspending on beauty, it is largely men who are most influenced by these influencers.

The UWM Men’s Shop in downtown Salt Lake City caters to fellas who like to look sharp. Upstairs, you’ll find some of the fanciest clothes to be found. Downstairs, some of the fanciest trims.

Jordan Zaugg owns the barbershop where looking pretty is embraced.

“They care about how others see them, and it’s a great way for them to care about how they look but also feel that masculine connection,” Zaugg said. “To feel like a man.”

Beauty is big business.

According to data from LendingTree, Americans spend an average of $1,754 a year on beauty products, cosmetics, and services. And make no mistake, that spending is being influenced by the aptly named influencers.

Forty-six percent of Americans say social media has convinced them to spend more on beauty.

Here’s something that may surprise you: it is men, more than women, where these influencers are finding success.

“Men are not immune to the whims of vanity,”Ismat Mangla, LendingTree’s senior director of content said.

Mangla says data from Deloitte shows men spend $2,256 annually on their beauty supplies, while women spend $1,283 – just about 75% more! The same analysis found men spend nearly 40% more on beauty products and services splurges than women.

“Men are just as likely to splurge as women and they do tend to spend more money than women do,” she said.

Back at UWM Men’s Shop, Zaugg says you can feel beautiful and still feel like a man.

“Whether it’s beauty, whether it’s charming, or handsome.”

While the research also points to some overspending regrets, he honors dudes who want to look their best along with the influencers who normalize it.

“Influencers have made it easier for men to want that, but for it to be acceptable to be that tough man,” Zaugg said. “But a tough man that looks pretty damn good.”

So, why are men more susceptible to the charms of influencers than women? Hard to say for sure, but with so much marketing being targeted at women for generations now, perhaps women have gotten a little better at filtering it.
