The 16 Best At-Home Keratin Treatments for Frizz-Free Hair

If your natural hair runs on the frizzy, can’t-be-tamed side of the spectrum and you can’t be bothered straightening and styling day in and day out, you might have done a little digging into the big wide world of keratin treatments. First, there are in-salon options. And while they’re highly effective, they can cost up to $300 or more and take up a big chunk of time (think: three to six hours). Then, there are at-home keratin treatments, which can give similar smoothing and straightening benefits at a fraction of the price and without a lot of the harsh chemicals (looking at you, formaldehyde.).

While it’s pretty likely that you’re going to get more foolproof, longer-lasting results from a salon treatment, hair chemist and medical researcher Alexandra Arriaga explains that at-home treatments can be worthwhile, budget-friendly alternatives. But (and this is a big one) it’s important to do your research. “Not all at-home keratin treatments are created equal,” she says. It’s important to avoid certain chemicals and familiarize yourself with the pros and cons of each option.

Ways to Save Wildlife From Extinction

Courtesy of Mike Lewinski (Flickr CC0)

Wildlife is a big part of our world. There are birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, and many other species that live in our forests, jungles, and oceans. Unfortunately, many of these animals are disappearing at an alarming rate due to human activities such as deforestation and pollution. If we want future generations to enjoy wildlife as much as we do today then we need to act now. Here are some easy ways you can help protect endangered animals.

How to Save Wildlife?

People can help save wildlife by learning about the animal they wish to save. Find out what threats the critter faces and how they are being addressed.

For example, a widespread pesticide might be contaminating water sources where birds are drinking and bathing. This could lead to bird populations declining because their food supply is contaminated, or because there aren’t enough healthy birds left who can breed new generations of birds.

The best solution might be educating farmers on the dangers of pesticides so that they use less toxic forms. Or explain how using alternative methods like drip irrigation limits direct contact between groundwater and chemicals.

Courtesy of Lau Ardelean(Flickr CC0)

To protect endangered animals, you need to know what they are and what they aren’t. Some animals are more at risk than others. For example, the ocelot is a species that’s been on the endangered list since 1982. It’s often hunted for its fur and skin. But there are other species that are also in trouble — like elephants, rhinos, tigers, and polar bears.

But it isn’t just animal products like fur or ivory that contribute to the extinction of these creatures; many other items can be harmful too.

For example, cutting down trees in the woods and rainforests. This affects various animals and insects.  These forests were home to many endangered species including birds like parrots that eat seeds from trees with hard shells such as acorns or nuts. Some types of woodpecker birds drill holes into trees so squirrels can store their food there safely if there aren’t any squirrels around.

Deforestation devastates various insect habitats like fireflies, larvae, dung beetles, bark beetles, and others. It also causes soil erosion, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, desertification, climate change, and fewer crops. It also causes a host of issues for Indigenous people.

Other Ways to Protect Wildlife

Don’t buy souvenirs made from sea shells, coral, or other animal parts.

Buying souvenirs made from endangered animals and their habitats not only supports the trade of products derived from these animals but also encourages people to continue hunting them. That’s why it is crucial to educate yourself about which souvenirs are harmful before purchasing them at your next vacation destination.

If you must have a memento from your trip, consider buying something that is eco-friendly or locally made instead of something that supports animal cruelty and damages our environment. You can find many alternative souvenir options online or at craft fairs in your area.

Don’t Throw Trash in the Oceans or Forests

Courtesy of Collin Jackson (Flickr CC0)

You can do your part by not throwing trash in the ocean or into the forest.

Don’t throw trash in the ocean. You’re killing wildlife and destroying their habitat, which is completely senseless and unnecessary. You can help by picking up any litter that you see on your walks along the beach or during a vacation getaway with family members. Share these tips with others as well so that everyone knows how important it is to keep our oceans clean!

Don’t throw the trash into your local forests. With so many animals living in our forests, it’s important not to toss bottles or food wrappers where they might hurt someone later on down the line — and not just animals but humans too.

Make sure you keep track of where you put things so nothing gets left behind. Otherwise, someone else might pick up after us without knowing exactly what could happen if they don’t think about what would happen next time around when someone else comes along looking for something else instead of going through all this trouble again.

Don’t Disturb Them

It’s important to keep your distance from wild animals, so they can continue to live in their natural habitat. When you’re in the wilderness, don’t approach or try to touch them. If a wild animal approaches you, back away slowly and speak calmly so it knows you’re not a threat.

Wildlife experts suggest that if you see any signs of an injured or sick animal in the wild (such as limping), leave the animal alone and contact local wildlife officials for help.

Tell a Friend

You’re probably wondering how you can help save wildlife. The best way is to tell your friends and family about the importance of conservation. You don’t have to be an expert on wildlife conservation. Just share stories with them about how animals are disappearing and why it’s so important for us all to do our part in helping them out.

Encourage your friends and family members to make small changes in their daily lives that will help protect the environment and wildlife: For example, suggest that they only use reusable bags at grocery stores instead of using plastic bags. Or encourage them not to throw their trash away but instead recycle it or compost it if possible.

The Future of Wildlife Is in Your Hands

Wildlife is vital to our planet, our health, and well-being, our economy, and our culture. They help to improve the quality of life for millions of people around the world by providing them with food, clothing, and medicine. They also provide us with many other services such as cleaning up polluted waterways and protecting our crops from pests that can damage or destroy them.

It’s no surprise then that as a species we are under immense pressure to live more sustainable lives on this planet. One where we don’t rely so heavily on natural resources like oil but instead live in harmony with nature. A future where there are plenty more pandas than polar bears, zebras, and elephants.

Making Small Changes

You can help protect wildlife by making small changes in your daily lives. Here are a few ideas that can make a big difference:

  • Shop for sustainable seafood. By choosing seafood that is labeled as “sustainable,” you can be sure that it was harvested or farmed in ways that won’t harm other animals or the environment. You’ll also know that what you’re eating hasn’t been overfished and will support businesses with good practices.
  • Become an advocate for wildlife conservation through organizations like [insert name of your favorite wildlife conservation organization]. These organizations need donations, volunteers, and members to help them achieve their goals of restoring populations of endangered species or preventing extinctions altogether.
  • Use less plastic. It contains toxic chemicals which can leach into our water supply, harming aquatic life and contaminating our food chain when ingested by animals who later become part of our diet.

Join the Fight

If you want to join the fight against extinction, there are many ways to do so. We’ve outlined some of the most important ones above, but there are also many other things that you can do in your everyday life to help save our planet from destruction. It’s never too late to start protecting wildlife from extinction — and it won’t cost you anything but a few minutes each day.

Fenty, Glossier, Skkn, Dior – The Hollywood Reporter

The number one question to ask yourself when considering the best refillable beauty products for your routine is one of commitment. Are you ready to commit to a long-term relationship with this moisturizer, lipstick or palette? The point of refillable products is to reduce waste. But because the outer packaging is designed to be easily opened, emptied and refilled by the consumer, there is often more plastic required to create refillable outer packaging than a single-use jar or tube. The savings (for you, and the environment) come with repeated use, reducing plastic waste over time

With this in mind, we culled the refillable skincare and cosmetics worth the commitment. And there’s no shortage of options in the beauty marketplace including new low waste-minded brands such as Stella McCartney Beauty, EcoFabulous (from sustainability-focused beauty manufacturer Amyris, which is behind Biossance, JVN Hair and Rose Inc) and SpoiledChild, while companies like Lancome, Chanel, Kérastase, Diptyque and many others have recently debuted refillable options.

Our picks are standout products that make up the core of an eco-conscious beauty wardrobe, like a go-to brow pencil from celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, a nourishing long-wear lipstick from Dior and a skin-smoothing night cream from Rihanna’s Fenty Skin. Sweden’s Filippa K Enters China With Launch on Alibaba’s Tmall

NORTHAMPTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / October 20, 2022 / Filippa K said the Scandinavian fashion house has entered China by launching on Alibaba Group’s Tmall, which connects businesses with over a billion consumers.

Alibaba Group, Thursday, October 20, 2022, Press release picture

Stepping into the world’s second-largest economy is part of the Stockholm-headquartered brand’s international growth strategy.

Filippa K, known for its its minimalism and wardrobe staples, believes its commitment to sustainable fashion will help it appeal to Chinese consumers. The brand uses organic cotton, recycled fibers and materials that promote animal welfare in its collections.

“The house has a unique position within high-end fashion, offering a distinctly Scandinavian design perspective that’s rooted in sustainability,” Filippa K’s CEO Rikard Frost said in a statement about the brand’s entry into China.

A Swedish native, Frost joined Filippa K last year with a mission to reboot Filippa K for the post-pandemic landscape using his experience in e-commerce. He spent over a decade leading the digital transformation of Acne Studios from a local denim brand to an international fashion house.

Filippa K’s international push comes as the climate crisis weighs on purchasing decisions worldwide. A recent survey found that 90% of Chinese consumers already know the importance of sustainable shopping.

About 80% of Chinese consumers try to avoid plastic materials and nearly half have purchased second-hand or organic clothing in the past two years, said consultancy Roland Berger who conducted the survey in collaboration with fashion industry trade journal WWD.

“There is a strong demand [in China] for timeless Scandinavian design and quality goods with a sustainability profile,” said Mei Chen, Alibaba’s Head of Fashion and Luxury for the U.K., U.S. and Northern Europe.

Female consumers in China are more willing than men to buy sustainable fashion products and pay a higher premium. However, the premium on eco-friendly goods remains marginal, said Roland Berger.

Alibaba is targeting Scope 1 and 2 carbon neutrality by 2030 and is working with global brands to offer more climate-friendly choices to Chinese consumers.

In 2014, Filippa K developed a circularity strategy that has guided its efforts of reducing, reusing, repairing and recycling garments to lower its impact on the planet.

Scandi Design

Filippa K’s Tmall store opened in China with the Autumn/Winter 2022 and core collections of women’s, men’s, active and loungewear. Creative Director Liisa Kessler’s first collection for Filippa K, Spring/Summer 2023, will be available from November.

Kessler, a multilingual German/Finn, joined the brand from French fashion house Saint Laurent earlier this year, becoming the first successor to Filippa Knutsson who co-founded the brand in 1993.

Founded in 1993, Filippa K is majority owned by Novax, the investment arm of family-run business Axel Johnson.

How to make your spooky holiday more eco-friendly

Halloween is a time for tricks and treats, but it also means more litter and waste that end up in landfills.

A 2019 investigation by an environmental group in the United Kingdom found that about 83% of Halloween costume materials are oil-based plastics that likely won’t be recycled. Experts say a single trick-or-treater will generate one pound of trash on Halloween

From Halloween costume exchanges to pumpkin smashes, there’s no shortage of ways to celebrate the spooky holiday while also reducing waste.

Merleanne Rampale, public information and education director at SWALCO, an environmental organization in Illinois, has a list of suggestions on how to have a green Halloween.

Make your costume at home — or buy one at the thrift store

Toni O’Hara of Falmouth, dressed in a home-made jellyfish costume, waits to walk with her children in the annual Halloween parade. (Photo by Derek Davis/Staff photographer)

One way to help reduce waste is to skip buying a new costume wrapped in plastic and make your own, or find a used one instead. Take sheets, old and unwanted clothing, and check out websites like or for free costumes. You can also check your local free/buy nothing groups on Facebook and other social media sites.

Host a Halloween costume exchange

(Rick Madonik/Toronto Star via Getty Images)

Halloween costume exchanges are a great way to reduce waste — and save a few pennies by not buying a new costume.  Hosting a costume exchange is about as easy as it sounds:

  • Pick a date and age range for the costumes
  • Invite your friends, family and neighbors
  • Decide what kind of event it will be — “take one, leave one” or “take what you need” — and make sure to communicate that ahead of time.

Rampale said you can contact your local environmental agency or other nonprofits to try and coordinate a larger, community-wide exchange.  And after the costumes have been swapped, you can organize a recycled costume parade!

Use LED lights and soy or beeswax candles

Jack-o’-Lantern (Photo by © Viviane Moos/CORBIS/Corbis via Getty Images)

If your Halloween displays include lights or candles for the jack-o-lantern, Rampele suggests using more environmentally friendly LED lights over other bulbs, and use soy or beeswax candles.

Create a Halloween-themed geocache using recycled items

You can weave Halloween into a fun family geocaching game! has some ideas on how to use things like old books, tin cans, empty bottles and more to create a spooky geocache.

Skip the plastic trick-or-treating buckets

(Photo by David Dee Delgado/Getty Images)

Use items like reusable totes, pillowcases, or other reusable bags when out trick-or-treating to reduce plastic consumption.

Turn your pumpkin into a Thanksgiving centerpiece

If you only painted or carved on one side of your pumpkin, you can turn it around and use the other side to make a DIY Thanksgiving decoration.

Host a pumpkin-composting event

(Photo by © Erik Freeland/CORBIS SABA/Corbis via Getty Images)

According to Rampale, 40% of all food made for consumption ends up in a landfill — and 25% of it comes from household waste.

READ MORE: Teal pumpkins: They’re not just for decoration

You can help reduce that number by composting your own home’s pumpkins, or go a step further and host an event to collect pumpkins from around your neighborhood for composting. If you don’t have composting materials at home, local environmental agencies can help you find a composting bin for your home or a facility that does composting.

Another option: Smash it on the ground in your backyard or garden! You can even host a pumpkin-smashing event for your neighborhood.

Roast or plant your pumpkin seeds

Put your pumpkin seeds to good use: You can roast them for a tasty snack — or plant them and see what happens! Make sure you have enough room in your yard or garden for them to grow.
