The Best Plastic-Free Beauty And Wellness Gifts

The images of plastic bottles forming islands in our oceans and washing up on our formerly-beautiful beaches has me seeking out beauty and wellness products that are made of other, more environmentally-friendly materials.

Every minute, two garbage trucks of plastic—33 billion pounds of plastic every year—are dumped into our oceans, according to Oceana. No recycling program will ever keep up with those numbers.

And while changing which beauty products we buy in an attempt to minimize plastic might not save the world (and many of these products do use plastic pumps), it’s a start. For Mother’s Day, your mom will appreciate thinking of both her and Mother Earth.

Proteger Dermal Serum + Booster

Proteger’s multi-tasking Dermal Serum ($115) is meant to be used on the entire body, including your face. Even better, it’s unisex, so mom can share it (if she wishes, but we won’t blame her if she wants to keep it for herself). It contains 20% stabilized vitamin C to brighten and smooth, hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate, organic coffee seed extract to awaken and calm, plus organic aloe leaf juice to soothe and heal. And in June, look for three exciting boosters to address specific needs including bumpy skin, lines, discoloration. Pair them with the serum to make it even more potent—and the boosters will also come in glass bottles.

Josh Rosebrook Biome Body Cleanse

This beautiful cleanser has a mousse-y texture and works into a lather whithout leaving skin feeling dry. Biome Body Cleanse ($30) supports the healthy flora of your your microbiome with fermented rice water, prebiotics, and postbiotics. It also contains a ceramide complex to fortify the skin barrier and reduce redness and irritation. It has a fresh citrus scent with herbaceous undertones.

Two outdoor-loving sisters in Berkeley, California, wanted to reduce plastic waste. So at just 13 and 11 years old, they built (with mom’s help) Sustainabar, a collection of shampoo, conditioner, soap, dish soap, moisturizer, and more, all in bar form, delivered in zero-waste paper packaging. The bars are between $5 and $9, the ingredients are clean, and they actually work. A box of one of their colorful, handmade soaps would make a great gift for mom.

Axiology Multi-Use Balmies

The Axiology Vegan Multi-Use Balmie Super Fun Pack ($98, down from $148) is the ultimate in luxurious, sustainable makeup. Each completely plastic-free crayon can be used for lips, eyes, and cheeks, and is packed with oils, butter, and antioxidants. All Axiology products are 100% vegan, cruelty-free, palm oil-free, and made with nine naturally-derived ingredients. And with such a variety of colors, mom is sure to find some she loves—maybe she’ll even share.

Ace & Jig Picnic Throw

Whether she uses it for a picnic, at the beach, or as a tablecloth (she could even use it as a shawl, it’s that pretty), your mom will love a throw from this Fair Trade Certified brand. The Ace & Jig Picnic Throw ($235) comes in three beautiful textiles, which are all designed in-house. The brand has a cult following, and it’s not hard to see why.

Phlur Missing Person Fragrance Duet

The Missing Person scent from Phlur is a floral musk that the brand describes as “pure, provocative, and undeniably familiar.” The fragrance notes include white musk, nuances of jasmine and orange blossom, plus a light woody finish. The perfume duet ($98, down from $122) includes a 9.5ml travel size plus a full-size 50ml bottle for her vanity—it’s so beautiful she’ll want to keep it on display.

Siblings Candles The Starter Set

If your mom loves candles but is committed to sustainability, this pour-your-own- set is the perfect gift. The Starter Set ($64) comes with everything you need to pour your own candles, with compostable packaging and no plastic. The eco-friendly coconut blend wax includes non-toxic fragrance and essential oils, and the polished brass vessel is handcrafted in Sweden by Skultuna—one of the world’s oldest companies.

True Botanicals Glowy Skin Confidence Set

The older I get, the more I understand that acne never ends, and blemishes can and do coexist with wrinkles. Not to worry though, the True Botanicals Glowy Skin Confidence Set ($198, down from $248) covers all the bases. With ingredients including chebula, hyaluronic acid and helichrysum, these three products moisturize, prevent blemishes, and balance the skin.
