Appreciate your mother and Mother Earth with a plastic-free (or plastic-minimal) gift this Mother’s … [+]
The images of plastic bottles forming islands in our oceans and washing up on our formerly-beautiful beaches has me seeking out beauty and wellness products that are made of other, more environmentally-friendly materials.
Every minute, two garbage trucks of plastic—33 billion pounds of plastic every year—are dumped into our oceans, according to Oceana. No recycling program will ever keep up with those numbers.
And while changing which beauty products we buy in an attempt to minimize plastic might not save the world (and many of these products do use plastic pumps), it’s a start. For Mother’s Day, your mom will appreciate thinking of both her and Mother Earth.
Proteger Dermal Serum leaves skin radiant and fortified.
Proteger Dermal Serum + Booster
Proteger’s multi-tasking Dermal Serum ($115) is meant to be used on the entire body, including your face. Even better, it’s unisex, so mom can share it (if she wishes, but we won’t blame her if she wants to keep it for herself). It contains 20% stabilized vitamin C to brighten and smooth, hyaluronic acid to plump and hydrate, organic coffee seed extract to awaken and calm, plus organic aloe leaf juice to soothe and heal. And in June, look for three exciting boosters to address specific needs including bumpy skin, lines, discoloration. Pair them with the serum to make it even more potent—and the boosters will also come in glass bottles.

Sustainabar handmade soap is completely plastic-free and a beautiful gift.
Sustainabar
Two outdoor-loving sisters in Berkeley, California, wanted to reduce plastic waste. So at just 13 and 11 years old, they built (with mom’s help) Sustainabar, a collection of shampoo, conditioner, soap, dish soap, moisturizer, and more, all in bar form, delivered in zero-waste paper packaging. The bars are between $5 and $9, the ingredients are clean, and they actually work. A box of one of their colorful, handmade soaps would make a great gift for mom.
