For the second year in a row, the Ipswich elementary school Green Teams are working together to organize a free exchange of toys, books and children’s clothing ahead of the winter season and its holidays.

Shoppers are encouraged to drop off gently used items for children (ages 0-16) from 8 to 10 a.m. Dec. 3 and shop for free from 11 to 4 p.m. The event will be held inside the town hall gymnasium, Saturday, Dec. 3.

It is all part of an effort to curb environmental waste, according to organizers.

A pair of jeans uses about 1800 gallons of water while a T-shirt uses 400 to make, they said. Meanwhile, the manufacture of a pound of plastic requires about 22 pounds of water.

“From the windows of the town hall gym, shoppers will be able to see the Ipswich River and consider how they are doing their part in protecting water and fostering eco-friendly habits in their families,” organizers said.

At the end of the event, Green Team organizers have planned for donations to be picked up and distributed to various local organizations.

If shoppers wish, they can donate $5 or less towards the rental of the gymnasium and for the benefit of the Doyon and Winthrop Green Teams.
