Elsewhere, fast fashion sites such as ASOS, Shein, Boohoo and Pretty Little Thing – have tapped into the modest market with inclusive campaigns that feature visibly Muslim models with their hair and bodies covered.

According to the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2020/21, the modest fashion industry is one of the fastest growing sectors that is currently valued at $277 billion and is estimated to reach $311 billion by 2024.

“Modest fashion is not something new, it is a global trend that is huge and has been around for a very long time,” says founder of Modest Fashion Weeks, Ozlem Sahin. “However, in the last 10 years we have seen more options for modest fashion lovers thanks to global exposure from the digital media, Muslim influencers, new designers and the Modest Fashion Week movement, “she adds.

What is modest headwear?

Within the Muslim community, there are diverse interpretations of the modesty looks like, which can vary from person to person. The hijab is a head covering worn by some Muslim women in public as the Islamic code of conduct. Hijabs are available in a wide range of fabrics, textures, colours and prints and can be worn in multitude of ways depending on the style or modesty preferences of the wearer. While the hijab is an element of modest dressing for Muslim women, some may choose not to cover their hair on a daily basis, but may still wear the hijab in private when performing religious acts – such as prayer.

What are the latest modest headwear trends for autumn/winter 2022?

“Sustainability is one of the leading modest trends, so we will see more natural fabric hijabs – made with cotton or viscose – trending this Autumn-Winter,” says Ozlem Sahin. “When it comes to colours and prints, the one colour option is still more preferable than the printed hijabs, with black or grey shades and soft neutrals trending the most. Finally, different hijab sizes and multi-way scarves are highly favoured by hijabi women.”
