When I first started writing about beauty I was the assistant at Glamour magazine. This was the era when it was the nation’s beloved handbag-sized bible — and all the features followed a similar format. Let me give you some examples: “The seven top blushes to try!”, “The eight red lipsticks for your best pout yet!”, “The nine new shampoos for flick-worthy hair!” You get the idea . . . But as the years have gone by I’ve realised that format really doesn’t work for a column. I can’t possibly be loving eight red lipsticks or nine new shampoos at any one time.
